Our activities are based on the following 3 ideas:

　CASA is an Environmental NGO which is formed by the individual citizens and citizens' groups that share our ideas. As of , there are approximately 40 NGOs and 300 citizens (including researchers and lawyers) dealing with various environmental issues all over Japan.

CASA'S ACTIVITIES

• Help Local Air Pollution Victims

During the Nishiyodogawa Pollution trial in Osaka, CASA helped settle the case out of court and made significant contributions to set an "Auto exhaust pollution limit" . It was an historical precedent in Japan. Every year in June, CASA participates in the National Action of Pollution Victims.

• Stop Climate Change !

Even before the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change was agreed upon, CASA considered the threat of global warming and climate change as one of the most serious environmental issues. CASA is one of a few Japanese NGOs that has been working in these areas and has sent representatives to various conferences including the IPCC, 2nd World Climate Conf., INC and COP. CASA is also actively involved in the negotiation process as a member of the Climate Action Network (CAN), a worldwide NGO link.
In Japan, CASA had requested the early action of the Japanese government in their "Action Plan to Prevent Global Warming".
For COP3, which was held in Kyoto (Dec.1-Dec.11 1997), CASA participated in a nationwide "Kiko forum'97 - Citizen's Convention on Preventing Global Warming". This was an umbrella organization of roughly 50 Japanese NGOs that supported the activities of citizens and NGOs (especially from the South) for COP3. As a member of its permanent steering committee, CASA fully supported the activities of "Kiko Forum'97".

• Public Education Program : Citizens’Environmental Seminar

CASA annually holds lectures called "Citizens’ Environmental Seminar" which include lectures and extra-field activities. Various topics such as global warming, various pollution and renewable energy are taken up. All issues are explained with simple and easy terms.
CASA welcomes anyone to join the seminar.

• The Earth Summit

In June 1992, CASA attended the Earth Summit I in Brazil with a delegation of 108 members from 19 different organizations. We organized two global NGO meetings: The "Symposium on global warming," and "Monitoring network of global pollution". CASA sent representatives to the CSD (Commission on Sustainable Development) which evaluates each country's attainment of 40 items stated in "Agenda 21" each year.
At the Earth Summit in Johannesburg, CASA held the “Issues of atmosphere in East Asia" workshop with East Asian NGOs.

• The Establishment of an Environmental Assessment Law

CASA worked to establish an effective "Basic environmental law" and a "Environmental assessment system" through the announcement of the statement and public hearings. With associations with other groups in the Kinki region, CASA also held symposiums and research meetings with panelists from environmental agencies. CASA strongly demands public participation in decision making process such as "scoping" and "Screening". CASA believes the business community is responsible for measures against pollution and environmental preservation.

• Atmosphere Action Network in East Asia (AANEA)

In August of 1995, the representatives of NGOs from 7 countries and regions in East Asia formed AANEA. One of the parties chairs annual meetings which discusses on regional air pollution, acid rain and global warming. Currently 8 NGOs including CASA are steering committee members. 19 NGOs participate in AANEA.

The CASA letter is issued 4 times yearly. It includes CASA's latest activities, reports on international conferences as well as opinions and suggestions on related matters. Back issues of newsletter are available. Please contact our secretary. (Sorry, in Japanese only)

What is THE ROSTER.....? In the U.N., economic, social activities and international cooperation must be discussed among NGOs. U.N. registered NGOs are divided into three categories; Category I, Category II and Roster. Attendance at the meetings and the number of allowable submission papers accepted are allotted in accordance with each category.
